Highland Hills Community Center Wins the Summer Challenge!

Contributed by: Ambriale Davis

As the new school year approaches, summer comes to an end. This summer FitWorth challenged the children of Fort Worth to track their weekly physical activity, minutes of reading, fruit, vegetable, and water consumption. Ten community centers totaling almost 4,000 kids competed for a visit from mayor Betsey Price as well as a personalized banner and supply of healthy snacks. Over four weeks the community completed almost 1 million minutes of physical activity, 400,000 minutes of reading, ate almost 50,000 servings of fruits and vegetables, and drank over 80,000 servings of water. Despite this collective achievement, only one community center can hold the title as winner of the  FitWorth Mayor’s Summer Challenge. This title was won by Highland Hills community center, who on average had the highest numbers across the various categories. The children of Highland Hills completed over 200,000 minutes of physical activity, over 85,000 minutes of reading, ate more than 11,000 servings of fruits and vegetables, and drank almost 20,000 servings of water. Mayor Betsey Price visited the children and staff of the community center to congratulate them on their efforts, encourage their continuation of healthful behaviors, and closed out with the Cupid Shuffle. Not only were the kids excited and engaged with her words, but they were proud of their own achievements that won them the rightful recognition as the challenge winners.
