Summer is here and school is out!. Through programs at City of Fort Worth Community Centers, the children of Fort Worth are staying physically and mentally engaged on their summer break.

This week Mayor Betsy Price, along with FitWorth, had the opportunity to visit with kids participating in the Mobile REC and Camp Fort Worth summer programs. The mayor engaged with the various groups of children via physical activity and reading. Without practice, children can lose content knowlege they gained in the previos school year. This phenomenon sometimes called the “summer slide” can cause children to fall behind on the progress they’ve made during the school year.  Community figures and guardians at home emphasizing the importance of reading when school is out is essential to a child’s developing education.

Physical activity and education go hand in hand to prevent health issues like obesity.1  As a parent, you can also aid in decreasing your child’s risk of developing childhood obesity by being a positive role model. Mothers who maintain a healthy weight, never smoke, exercise vigorously for 150 minutes per week, eat healthy, and consume low to moderate amounts of alcohol are shown to decrease the chances of their child being obese by 75%. By having healthy role models at home and a city that cares about its’ children, we can ensure that the children of Fort Worth stay healthy and thrive.
