5 Ways to Get Moving Outside with Your Family

Contributed by: Baillie McKenzie

Spring has officially sprung, and people can be seen walking and biking along the Trinity Trails or kids gearing up for their selected sports activities. Fort Worth has made available multiple possibilities for the community to become more active. The weather, though sometimes temperamental, is perfect for families to begin incorporating outdoor activities and start reaping the health benefits together. Here are five ways that you and your family can get moving around Fort Worth:

Local Fun Runs– You don’t have to be the fastest of the pack or able to run non-stop to participate. Fun runs are a great way to get everyone involved in physical activity while also raising awareness for a cause. Most of these runs are suitable for all ages, allow strollers and your furry four-legged friend, and some will also have shorter distances such as a 1K.

Bike Ride– The Trinity Trails is a great way to explore Fort Worth along the river. With the Fort Worth B-Cycle program, you and your family can rent bikes and return them to any station around the city for $8/day. If you go online, you can purchase long-term passes if you want to make this a more frequent outing. Be sure to stay safe on the trails by wearing your helmets and watch for walkers and runners.

Local Parks & Attractions– Take your family out for an adventure and visit some of the local parks in Fort Worth such as Eagle Mountain Park, Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge, Fort Worth Zoo or Water Gardens. Allow yourselves to enjoy the adventure, scenery and even find a new favorite spot! It’s a great way to disconnect while getting a few steps.

Local Run/Walk Group – If you’ve been wanting to walk or run a 5K, but didn’t know where to begin, this is a great place to start! Whether you’ve never ran or your significant other is an avid runner, local running/walking groups are great for all experience. The Fort Worth Running Company, Social Run and RunOn are a few examples of local groups. They are welcoming to everyone, provide great motivation, and you will get to meet more people within the community.

Join a Team Sport – For all the competitive families out there, this one is for you! Try joining a local intramural team or create your own! Make it more fun by encouraging your family friends to join as well! Talk about a great way to get moving in some friendly competition.

These are just some of the possibilities for getting active within the community. Even if it’s only for 30 minutes, adding physical activity is beneficial to our overall well-being. Encouraging your family to join you along the way will not only benefit their health but allow you to make many memories along the way.
