Healthy Snacking

Everybody needs a snack from time to time. Maybe lunch was light and dinner is hours away, or maybe you’re fueling up for that late afternoon run on the trails. The key is to keep your body fueled without going overboard on calories. We know we need to eat something, but what?

According to the Centers for Disease Control, people feel full based on the amount of food they eat, not the calories that they take in. Knowing this, fruits and vegetables make excellent snacks both at home or on the road. These food choices tend to be high in fiber and low in fat and calories, which will keep you full without weighing you down.

Fruits that you can eat on the run like apples, fruits, and bananas are great choices. So are washed and cut vegetables like celery carrots, and cucumbers. Aim for a more compete snack by including some protein by adding in low fat yogurt or cheese, or nut butter.

The FitWorth Culinary Competition is coming up on September 16th, look for the high school competitors to turn out some great snack ideas. We’ll let you know who the winners are and how to re-create their entries at home.
